The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has completed traffic studies for both the intersection of state Route 96 and U.S. Highway 41A in Triune and the one-way tunnels dotted along Wilson Pike.Image title

With the completion of the studies, TDOT has said both the intersection and two of the tunnels may be receiving traffic lights by 2017.

The tunnels, which often require drivers to honk their horns to let a driver on the other side know it is not safe to come through, are now being designed to include signalization, and are scheduled to go out for bid in 2017. The two tunnels being serviced are by Tolloos Road and Butternut Road on Wilson Pike.

At the Triune intersection, some land will have to be purchased in order to make room for right-of-way. The state has begun this process, and is scheduled to begin construction in early 2017. Traffic signals will be added as well as left turn lanes from all four directions.

Both improvements, however, are contingent upon funding.
